Anglian Water investment plans for Wymondham Water Recycling Centre
Anglian Water is proposing investment and expansion plans for the treatment facilities at Wymondham Water Recycling Centre (WCR),to comply with the five obligations for the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP). This work is being carried out in line with the UK government’s environmental principles for building a greener future, including improving water quality in the River Tiffey and throughout the catchment area.
The compliance deadlines for the new obligations require immediate action to be taken to allow time for both construction and commissioning.
Russell Beal, Engagement Specialist at Anglian Water, said:
“We have considered carefully our land requirements to enable us to meet these obligations and the options available to us, and we have concluded that the land area between the Wymondham Water Recycling Centre and Chapel Lane, currently leased to the Town Council since 2006 for Allotments (for a period of 21 years), is the only viable option for the additional treatment processes needed.
The lease agreement includes a clause that will allow either party to provide a year’s notice of early termination, which we have given to the Town Council.
We are aware and fully understand the value placed on these allotments by the Town Council, allotments holders and the wider community.
We know that people will be disappointed to lose their allotment plots and we’re genuinely sorry that we need to take this land back from the local community.
We will liaise with the Council at all stages of the project to keep them updated on progress. We will also find a convenient date to arrange a community drop-in session once our plans are more fully developed.”
Councillor Suzanne Nuri-Nixon (Mayor of Wymondham Town Council) commented:
“I know that allotment holders will be very disappointed with this news and as a Council we are also saddened that Anglian Water are ending the lease on this land earlier than expected.
The Town Council is actively looking for a new site and I ask any landowners who may have a potential site to contact the Council.”
