Council calls for traders to join their historic markets

WYMONDHAM Town Council is calling on traders far and wide to come and secure a pitch at their historic weekly Friday Market held at the Market Cross, with reduced pitch fees for newcomers.

Revised fees come into effect on Friday 6th July and the Council is hoping new traders will join the Market which has traditionally been held in Wymondham for more than 9 centuries.

Local councillors are keen for the Market to continue to thrive, particularly with the imminent arrival of the Digital Heritage Trail and Wymondhams’ very own GoGo Hare Henry, which will encourage more visitors to the historic market town.

Councillors recently consulted with existing traders to come up with measures to help the Friday Market and also the Farmers’ Market which is held on the third Saturday of every month.

As a result of this consultation Cllr Kevin Hurn produced a paper which was presented at the June meeting of Wymondham Town Council, outlining plans to reinvigorate the town’s markets. The proposals received unanimous approval from all councillors.

A council spokesperson said “We have a wonderful setting for our Markets, next the historic Market Cross building and it is a treat to see a bustling market in our Town, a tradition that goes back centuries. Wymondham town council is now offering trial pitches to new traders for the Friday Market or the monthly Farmers Market and this is a great opportunity to come and trade in a historic Norfolk town. A visit to our markets is an enjoyable experience for visitors and residents alike who not only have the opportunity to pick up some lovely fresh produce along with other ‘can’t buy in the shops’ items but also enjoy the social aspect of a busy market and take in the great shopping and heritage opportunities that make our town unique.”

The traditional  Friday Market was first permitted under King John back in 1203 with the Charter renewed a couple of centuries later by King Henry VI in 1440.

Wymondham’s Charter allowing for a market in the Town is stored at Wymondham Abbey.

The Farmers Market is over 18 years old and was the first of its kind in Norfolk.
